This section gives an overview of some of the fundraising activity organised by the INSPIRE Foundation. Our aim is both to raise money for our research programme and raising awareness about the charity’s objective . We are always looking for new ideas and would welcome any suggestions you may have.

Annual Polo Tournament – July.  One of our major public relations and fundraising activities takes place at the annual polo tournament at Tedworth Park near Andover.

The Benney Memorial Trophy.  In recognition of the wonderful patronage of the late Mrs Janet Benney,  The INSPIRE Foundation sponsors The Benney Memorial Trophy awarded after an exhibition tournament between two celebrity teams representing the Jockeys vs the Eventers.  As well as two chukkas of polo, the teams compete in ‘bicycle polo’ and then the Two Furlong Dash which whips up the tempo prior to the wheel chair relay between three surprise teams.  After prize giving at the main Grandstand,  INSPIRE’s guests then withdraw to a delightful marquee for a champagne reception and three course lunch.  In the afternoon they are at liberty to wander back down to watch more polo, firstly the Indian Cavalry Officers’ Association match and then the main event of the day the Rundle Cup between teams from the Royal Navy and Army.  A delicious afternoon tea is also served in the INSPIRE marquee.

Prefer to Picnic? We also offer discounted parking and Grandstand tickets for guests who would prefer to bring their own picnics rather than having a marquee lunch.

And so much more.  Our participation is part of a much bigger event along the lines of a country fair,  with arts and crafts stalls, retail outlets and many refreshment stands.  A military band plays during the afternoon, and weather permitting an Army free-fall team drops in for tea.  In all about 3,000 people attend of which approximately 200 are guests of INSPIRE.

Tickets.  We endeavour to cater for all requirements from the Marquee option,  discounted car parking only or just Grandstand tickets.

Spring Soiree.  Our annual Charity Wine Tasting and Auction takes place each Spring in Salisbury.  This is a lovely social gathering where Patrons, Trustees and Scientists are able to meet with the wider community and of course INSPIRE Members and Carers.  We enjoy a wide selection of excellent wines provided by Charles Steevenson Wines Ltd, one of the West Country’s leading independent wine merchants and delicious canapés from Wilton Catering & Farm Shop, The Bird & Carter

Timings: This early evening event runs from 6.30-8.30pm and includes a fun raffle and auction and importantly raises much needed funds for the charity.

Tickets.  We sell individual tickets by Invitation only.  Invited corporate guests may also purchase tickets at a slightly higher rate and will appear on our ‘List of Sponsors’ in recognition for their generosity.  Details of the next Wine Tasting Event will be posted in the Spring.

For more information about these race days, contact INSPIRE on 01722 336 262 Ext. 2465

`From time to time we are invited to raise funds at various racecourses and recently have had great success at Bath, Exeter, Wincanton Salisbury and Cheltenham. These days are enormous fun and can be profitable too!’

The INSPIRE Rosette.  If you are a racing enthusiast, you may have seen the INSPIRE Foundation Rosettes being worn by our supporters at various racecourses in the South of England.  This simple fundraising idea was launched in 2013 and enables the public to show their support for those living with Spinal Cord Injury.  The INSPIRE Rosette seemed particularly appropriate within the equine community as so many SCI injuries are as a result of horse riding accidents.

SCI Volunteers Needed!  Our experience is that wheelchair users encourage more generosity than the able bodied!  If you are interested in helping to fundraise by ‘selling’ rosettes for us, we would love to hear from you.  This will of course enable you to obtain a free ticket, worth at least £20 to the race meeting you choose. Run for INSPIRE.  If you are a keen runner and seeking a worthy charity to run for, look no further!  If you can guarantee raising sufficient funds to cover your entry fee, we may be in a position to help you.  The first step is to e mail: office@inspire-foundation.org.uk giving details of your planned conquest and we will endeavour to help you.

Calling all students!  For hard pressed students we may even be able to pay your entry fees.  All requests are subject to our own conditions being met.  Please call to assess your chances of sponsorship.

Website Merchandise

Volunteers and Bric-a-Brac needed! Each year we are able to secure a delightful chalet stall at Salisbury’s renown Christmas Market in early December. We sell assorted merchandise, handicrafts made for us at OT workshop at Odstock and our lovely Christmas Cards. This gives us a chance to ‘fly the flag’ and make a modest profit. Details will be posted in Events section in the autumn. Please note throughout the year we are able to collect bric a brac and at any time individuals can sign up as volunteers to help man the stall.

Moving house or de-cluttering? From time to time we run our charity stall on Market Day at Salisbury. If you, or a friend is moving house or wishes to pass on some of those once loved items, then we might be able to sell them on the INSPIRE stall as part of our fundraising. We are always open to take delivery of donated items, or can come and collect. Please call the office on 01722 336262 Ext 2465 and just ask for INSPIRE.

From the Author:  Nessie Owen

‘In December 1992 I dislocated and fractured my back at L1 in a skiing accident. I spent the next five months ‘in rehab’ at the Spinal Unit in Salisbury. The INSPIRE team was a massive source of inspiration and encouragement to me and I remain a huge supporter. In 1998 I compiled a cook book ‘Cook to INSPIRE ‘ to raise much needed funds and awareness for their great research work’.

Reprint.  Nessie’s book was so popular that the first edition of 5000 copies sold out within a year.  We have just dusted it off, updated it and had it reprinted.  Stocks are now available from the INSPIRE office at a cost of  £6.00 each or £7.50 including postage and packing.

To order: please email: office@inspire-foundation.org.uk or call 01722 336262 Ext 2465

May – Family Day Out.  In the late spring each year, the Grand Shaftesbury Run takes place at Wimborne St Giles, the home of Earl and Countess of Shaftesbury.  The INSPIRE Foundation is able to raise money through the efforts of volunteer runners.  You do not need to be an expert marathon runner to earn lots of sponsorship money!  There are three course options and entry costs are as follows we also have some free tickets to give to runners:

  • Half marathon                      £25.00
  • 10 kilometers                       £17.50
  • 1.0 kilometer km                  £5.00  (Children’s Fun Run)

The INSPIRE Salver.  Over the years we have worked alongside the organisers of the Wilton Horse Trials, a lovely family event which takes place within the grounds of Wilton House, west of Salisbury, and attracts some of the country’s leading eventers. We have for a number of years presented the INSPIRE salver which is awarded to the Winning Novice Rider (over 40 years old!).

Winter Warmer.  For nearly 30 years the annual Stockbridge Fun Run has taken place each January.  It raises money for the INSPIRE Foundation in recognition of the care received at Odstock by paraplegic George Skeates following a motorbike accident.  This is a wonderful family event for all ages and abilities, runners, cyclists and dog walkers alike.  A £10.00 entry fee is charged by the organisers and the proceeds are split between INSPIRE and a national cancer charity.  Come and support this wonderful Sunday morning activity.  Details with date, timings etc will be posted under Events when known.

Each year The Lady Amherst opens up her garden at Cheriton Cottage to the public and presents the proceeds to charity. Since becoming a Patron of the INSPIRE Foundation she has generously given part of her takings to this charity. The event is well advertised in the Winchester area and supported by a local nursery who help stock and tend the garden; they are available to offer expert advice and sell plants. Afternoon tea is also available with a wide selection of delicious homemade cakes.
