Spinal cord injury usually happens as a result of a car or motorbike accident, a sporting injury or an unlucky fall at home.

There are about 700 such injuries every year in the UK alone. Think about it - any one of these people could have been you.

Background

INSPIRE is a UK national charity which was formed in 1985 by people who were themselves spinal cord injured and who wanted to raise funds for the then embryonic Medical Physics Department in Salisbury. In 1995, the Foundation funded the first Freehand operation outside the USA and since then has been able to fund a number of projects in pursuit of its objective. In February 2000, INSPIRE became a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC).
